As Halloween approaches, I’m more than a tad embarrassed to see that my last posting was on Valentine’s Day.
Annual Voting Meeting
Our next big event is the Annual Voting meeting on Sunday, October 25, immediately following the service.
The Business portion of the meeting includes two items: voting on the candidates for the 2016 Board of Trustees and voting on candidates for the Endowment Committee. The candidates for 2016 Board were approved by the 2015 Board at its September meeting, based on the recommendations of the Nominating Committee. After the official business meeting is completed, we invite you to stay for some small group discussion about developing a covenant of right relations.
Ballots will be distributed at the meeting. Please contact me or Nominating Committee member Rece Howley if you would like an absentee ballot. Consistent with our bylaws, those who signed the UUFEC membership book by August 26 are eligible to vote in this election.
Special thanks to the following individuals who volunteered to run for the Board of Trustees:
John Holt, President; Josh Ashley, Vice President; Ed Farley, Treasurer; Denny Lauer, Secretary; Jan Mullins, member at-large; Winky Sweet, member at-large.
In addition to careful monthly review of financial and other reports, the Board attended to personnel matters, approving the hiring of Lisa Farley as Director of Religious Exploration and a contract for long-time music Director Cecile Lindegren. Special thanks to the ad hoc personnel committee, convened by Rev. Karen and to the DRE search committee.
Three Board members have resigned: Karen Lauer; Shirley Boughton; and Dave Abraham. I thank these members for their service to UUFEC. At the September meeting, the Board voted to have Josh Ashley complete the term vacated by Shirley.
We have also begun addressing several critical areas of church life and progress has been admittedly slow.
We have several sets of minutes to approve and post. I am hopeful that we will tend to this at our October 19 meeting, and post approved minutes shortly afterwards.
We have been struggling to address the issue of future professional ministry, in follow up to the 2015 canvass, in which pledges did not support a solid financial situation to seek a new minister. As announced in the Sunday service, we approved hiring Nels Oas—long-time snowbird friend of the UUFEC—to serve as a part-time minister January through March 2016. Rev. Nels will preach twice a month and be available to provide pastoral services. For the long-term, we have many different perspectives on the most appropriate way to address the lack of funding for future ministry and welcome your thoughts.
We re-affirmed our Board’s covenant of right relations at our June meeting and plan to engage the congregation in a series of conversations about adopting a congregation-wide covenant. This will begin immediately following the October meeting, as noted above. Stay tuned for additional opportunities to be part of this conversation in November!
As my two years as president comes starts winding down, I am mindful of how all our members contribute to UUFEC, everything from committee service, cleaning the yard and kitchen, and most importantly hugs, smiles and friendship.
I can’t say it enough: thank you, thank you and thank you, for all you do.
President, UUFEC Board of Trustees
